Dance workshop with Iñaki Azpillaga takes place at The Reykjavik Dance Atelier, Monday to Friday from 10:00 – 16:00

The next artist we get to meet is the Swedish choreographer Alma Söderberg, who will perform the piece Cosas in Tjarnarbíó, but the piece has been touring all over Europe as a part of the Aerowaves network.

First we will meet TRANZ, a group of performance artists recently graduated from The University of the Arts.  They will premiere the piece TANZ on the 7th og September.

Workshop with Iñaki Azpillaga September 5th – 11th

Come and join us at Reykjavík Dance Festival and a workshop with the renowned dancer and choreographer Iñaki Azpillaga in September!

Iñaki Azpillaga is a dance teacher based in Brussels who shares teaching regular classes to dance companies and leading workshops around Europe. He has been choreographic assistant to Wim Vandekeybus in several of his creations including “NieuwZwart” (09), Radical Wrong (11) & Oedipus/Bet Noir (11) currently on tour.  He has danced with highly acclaimed companies such as Ultima Vez/ Wim Vandekeybus and Mathilde Monnier, besides many other productions.

                                          About the workshop;

Movement is the key tool of the workshop. Exercises of partnering and floor work with high doses of energy will centre the attention of the studies. By exploring movements originated from necessity, urgency, limitation, emotional reason… we will enlarge our own dance lexicon. Changes between states of power and fragility will create rhythm of the proposed dance language.

Days: Monday 5th – Friday 9th
Hours: 10 – 12:00 / 12:30 – 16:00

The workshop will take place at the Reykjavík Dance Atelier, A workspace for choreographers in Reykjavík.

The preparation for this year´s festival is in full swing, but the festival will be held from the 5th – 11th of september 2011. This website is under construction, but slowly but surely information about participating artists will be published.

Eight blackbox pieces were selected, but there will also be performances in unconventional spaces, dance movie evenings, show and tell sessions, panel discussions and workshops.

Reykjavík Dance Festival is a very important platform for independent dancers and choreographers and serves an important role in the development of Icelandic dance.

Its main goal has always been to increase the visibility of contemporary dance in Iceland and introduce choreographers and their work to Icelanders and foreigners.

One of its big goals is to provide an international platform for Icelandic dance pieces and for the last years the festival has invited promoters and organizers of festivals from Europe and North America. That has surely paid off, since Icelandic pieces have been invited to festivals all around the world and the festival´s reputations has gone far and wide.

Therefore, Reykjavík Dance Festival has become an important platform for Icelandic choreographers  and has made its mark on Reykjavik´s cultural calendar. We hope that it will only get bigger and better in the coming years
